How To Create an Authentic Spa Experience at Home

These days, it can feel like there’s no time to slow down, but a little self-care goes a long way to boost your overall well-being. Even with limited time or a tight budget, it’s easy to create a spa-like experience at home.

Set the Scene

A spa day is as much for the health of your mind and spirit as it is for your body and skin. It’s nearly impossible to clear and recharge your mind when you’re surrounded by clutter. For the best experience, take the time to clean and de-clutter your bathroom. You’ll feel great about yourself before your spa day even starts! If that’s not an option – for example, if you share the bathroom with other people – just find a place that feels calm and peaceful for you.

Engage Your Senses

To truly recreate the essence of a spa environment, try to engage all five of your senses.

Touch

The phrase “spa day” tends to conjure up images of luxurious bubble baths and facial treatments. Those are great options, but a spa day doesn’t have to just be about your skin. If extra beauty products aren’t within your budget right now, work with what you have: try a homemade facial mask, some super-soft pajamas, or a heated blanket.

Sight

Make sure any stressful clutter is out of sight. Avoid using harsh overhead lighting. Instead, opt for soft, tranquil lighting, such as a lamp, candles, or gently filtered sunlight.

Sound

Turn off your phone, or at least mute any notifications that might disturb you. Try some quiet, relaxing music, white noise, or other soothing sounds. There are lots of apps available with white noise and other calming sounds – just be sure you can use them without other notification sounds rolling in. Even a loud fan can be surprisingly effective.

Smell

Scent has a huge effect on our brains – a particular smell can often trigger decades-old memories! Add some heavenly scent to your home spa experience with a candle, incense, essential oils, or botanicals like eucalyptus or dried lavender. You can even raid your pantry for scent staples like vanilla or cinnamon.

Taste

Consider making yourself a relaxing beverage with soothing ingredients, like golden turmeric milk or chamomile tea. While a glass of wine might seem tempting, skip it for now: alcohol has inflammatory properties that can cancel out the other benefits of your spa experience.

Change It Up

Make your spa experience feel special by making sure it stands apart from your everyday beauty habits. If your typical routine is of the no-frills, lather-rinse-done variety, then use this time to try some specialty products you would normally skip. If you’re usually more of a beauty multitasker, try to slow down, be present, and savor the ritual.

Too often, we fail to make self-care a priority, but failing to properly nurture your mind, body and spirit comes at a huge cost and holds you back from achieving your full potential. There’s no reason to put off treating yourself when it’s so easy to create a spa-like experience right in your own home.
